On a modern vehicle more than ten control units talk at once. The order in that traffic comes from communication design: which message goes in which cycle, which data sits in which bit field, and how the system behaves when a bus goes silent.
Communication defects are the hardest faults to find in the field: the system works most of the time and stalls occasionally. That is why we measure bus traffic, monitor error counters and deliver the message matrix as a written document. When a new unit is added later, that document makes the job straightforward — nobody has to work from guesswork.
